How to set up an online teleprompter

Use one browser for the controller and another for the viewer. Start with a short rehearsal script, then use the same setup for your recording.

Create, connect, and rehearse

Create a room
Tap Start Free Room on the device you want to use as the controller. Keep this tab open and use its separate viewer link for the teleprompter display.
Open the viewer on the teleprompter
Copy the viewer URL or scan the QR code from the share panel and open it on the tablet, TV, or second laptop in front of your camera. The viewer runs in the browser with no install.
Control playback live
Paste or type the script on the controller device — a laptop, phone, or second tablet. Adjust speed, font size, rotation, and mirror settings. Edits sync to every viewer in the room instantly.

Pair a phone with an iPad

Create a room in your phone browser.
Open Share. On the iPad, scan the QR code or open the viewer link.
Place the iPad beside the lens or in your glass rig. Keep the controller on your phone.
Type a test line, adjust speed, and press play. Confirm that the viewer updates before using your full script.

Choose your device pairing

Laptop + iPad on a camera rig

Run the controller on a laptop on your desk and open the viewer on an iPad clipped over a mirrorless or DSLR camera. Best for podcasts, YouTube videos, and solo interviews.

Phone + TV or confidence monitor

Keep the controller on your phone and open the viewer on a browser-capable TV, or a computer connected to a monitor across the room. Useful for livestreams, keynotes, and classroom recording.

Laptop + second laptop for stage prompting

Use a primary laptop as controller and a second laptop in presentation mode as a large confidence monitor. Good for stage talks and corporate AV setups.

Before you record

Format scripts with short lines

Break paragraphs into 6–10 word lines so your eye finds the next line naturally at reading speed. AirPrompt respects line breaks you paste in.

Calibrate speed before rolling

Read a paragraph at your target pace and adjust scroll speed until the top line matches your delivery. Default 60 is a comfortable starting point for most speakers.

Use font size for camera distance

Increase font size when the teleprompter sits further from the camera lens. A larger size keeps your eyes locked near the lens instead of drifting down the screen.

Disable auto-lock on the viewer

AirPrompt asks supported browsers to keep the viewer awake automatically, but some devices still require OS auto-lock to be disabled. If the viewer shows wake lock unsupported or blocked, turn auto-lock off before recording.

Troubleshooting and FAQ

Can I open the teleprompter on more than one screen at the same time?

Yes. Open the viewer URL on every screen you want to mirror. All viewers stay in sync with the controller, so you can run a main teleprompter at the camera plus a confidence monitor for the speaker.

How do I keep the tablet from going to sleep during a long take?

AirPrompt requests a screen wake lock on supported browsers while the viewer stays open and visible. If the viewer says wake lock is unsupported or blocked, set auto-lock to Never before the session. On iPad, Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → Never. On Android, keep the browser tab in focus and set screen timeout to the longest allowed value.

What device should I use as the controller?

Create the room on the device you intend to use as the controller. A laptop is convenient for editing and a phone for speed adjustments. A viewer link gives reading access, not controller access; opening a room URL in a different browser does not transfer control.

Can I mirror the text for a glass teleprompter rig?

Yes. Use the mirror toggle on the controller to flip horizontally or vertically so the text reads correctly through a beam-splitter glass teleprompter.

What happens if the viewer device reloads or loses connection?

The viewer tries to reconnect while the room is active. Temporary rooms can expire after inactivity, and a service restart clears them. Keep a separate copy of important scripts or sign in to save documents.

Is there a file size or script length limit?

Scripts run comfortably up to tens of thousands of characters. For extremely long sessions, split the script into saved documents and switch between them from the sidebar when signed in.
